You have been told to look after yourself first. You took the afternoon off and spent it thinking about who needed what. You tried asking for help and then did most of it yourself. You announced you were stepping back, and stepped back in within the week. Meanwhile there's nobody taking care of you. For once I don't want to be the person who has to work everything out.
The Needed rule tends to loosen when you are of no use to someone for a while and find that you are still wanted. Rest alone doesn't supply that. Neither does being thanked.
01
Why what you tried didn't hold
Self-care, time off, a resolution to do less. Each one is something more to do, and the rule may be untouched by it. An afternoon off is still an afternoon in which nobody needed you, and under this rule that is the uncomfortable part, not the restful part.
More appreciation doesn't do it either. Being thanked for what you do can confirm the arrangement. It can tell you, again, that the doing is what counts.
02
What the rule is waiting for
Under all of that is the rule.
What it says will happen
If they stop needing me, there's no reason for me to be here. "If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"
Under the Needed rule is a fear, that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. The rule may keep running because that has never been tested. You may never have stopped for long enough to find out.
What it needs is evidence of one specific kind: someone managing without you, asking you for nothing, and still wanting you there.

Three things to do
- Catch the unasked help. Each evening, ask who you did something for that day that they could have done themselves. You are not undoing any of it. You are finding out how much of your day it is.
- Let one thing be done for you, and don't manage it. Accept the offer. Then don't help, don't hover, don't make it easier for them, and don't repay it by the end of the week. Being cared for while you manage the person doing the caring doesn't count. Notice what it is like to simply receive it. It may feel wrong at first: I feel selfish when doing it.
- Spend time with someone and be of no use. Show up with nothing. Fix nothing while you are there. Leave their problem, if they mention one, as theirs. Then see whether they were glad you came.

What to expect
The first thing you will probably meet is the hollow feeling. That is what it is like when the rule is not being met, and it is the thing being tested. It is not a sign that you have done something wrong.
You may also meet some pushback. People who are used to being looked after can be puzzled, or put out, when it stops arriving. That tells you about the arrangement, and it tends to settle.
And you will probably step back in. You may hear yourself offering before you have decided to. Catching it afterward counts. Catching it mid-sentence counts more. It can look like this: I got the urge to help everybody at once, and I stopped to check what was really behind it. It doesn't have to stop for this to be working.

When this is the wrong page
If you are of no use to someone, they are glad to have you there anyway, and nothing shifts for you, this may be the wrong rule, or only part of it.
Two questions to check with. If they were completely happy and didn't need you at all, how would that land? If the answer is relieved, the steps above are aimed at the wrong thing, and the Peace rule is the place to look. And when someone offers to help you, what is the first thought? If it is now I owe them, that is closer to Burden. The other look-alikes are on What the Needed rule gets mistaken for.
One limit matters. None of this means withdrawing care from someone who can't manage without it. A small child, or a relative who is sick, needs what they need. The steps above are for the help nobody asked for. And if stepping back from someone would not be safe, because they make you pay when you do, none of this page applies.
