The Chosen rule

How to overcome fear of abandonment

By · Last updated

Fear of abandonment, needing to be the one who gets picked, tends to loosen when you are wanted on a day you did nothing to earn it, and you let that count.

What it says will happen

If I stop making myself the obvious one, I'll be passed over.

“I need to be chosen.”

A hypothesis, not a type

You have repeated to yourself that you are enough. You have tried acting as if you didn't mind and lasted a day. You asked for reassurance, got it, and felt better for about an hour. You took a break from dating and spent it thinking about the last person. There's a voice that says I haven't done enough yet for someone to really choose me.

The Chosen rule tends to loosen when you are wanted on a day you did nothing to earn it, and you let that count. Being told you are enough is not the same experience, and neither is winning someone over.

01

Why what you tried didn't hold

Reassurance answers the question for now. If the rule is running, the question comes back, because it was never about this one evening.

Winning someone over can make it stronger. Each time effort is followed by being picked, the lesson may be that effort is what gets a person picked.

Acting as if you don't mind is still acting for them. The aim may be the same: to be picked.

02

What the rule is waiting for

All of that was aimed at getting chosen. The rule is about what being chosen has come to mean.

What it says will happen

If I stop making myself the obvious one, I'll be passed over. "I need to be chosen."

Under the Chosen rule is a fear, that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. It can go a long time without being checked, because you may rarely leave a selection alone long enough to see what happens.

What contradicts it is a plain thing: being wanted while doing nothing to earn it. Belonging that isn't competitive is the name for that.

03

Three things to do

These are for ordinary, safe relationships. They are not a way to manage someone who uses affection as leverage.

  1. Notice the extra effort. Each evening, ask when you made yourself more interesting that day. More agreeable, more impressive, more fun. You are only counting for now.
  1. Leave one thing unrepaired for a day. The follow-up message. The fourth draft. The explanation nobody requested. Let it wait until tomorrow and see what the day does without it.
  1. Write down one time you were wanted for nothing. Someone was glad you came, saved you a seat, called for no reason. Record it plainly. Don't add what you had done to deserve it.

04

What to expect

The drop in the chest may show up, and the urge to fix something. They may be what happens when the rule goes unanswered, and they tend to pass.

Step three can be the hardest. It is easy to explain a kindness away as luck, or as payment for something. Catching yourself doing that is part of the step.

People who are steady with you may seem less interesting at first than people who keep you guessing. That can change, and it may take a while.

You will probably send the fourth draft some days. One sent message does not erase a day you waited.

05

When this is the wrong page

It is possible to be wanted for nothing, let it count, and find the old reaction just as strong. That would point away from Chosen, or toward Chosen with another rule beside it.

Two questions can help. Is there one specific person whose verdict runs this, or is it anyone who might pick you? If it is one person, someone you can name, the Approval rule is the better page. And would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted? If the answer is necessary, that is the Needed answer, and Needed has more on it. What the Chosen Rule Gets Mistaken For lays out the rest.

Two limits. Fresh grief after a real loss is not something to run experiments on. And if someone in your life gives and withdraws affection to control you, the problem is not a rule in you.The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
