The Burden rule

Feeling like a burden to your partner

By · Last updated

Feeling like a burden to your partner often comes with needing nothing from them, which can leave them with no way to be close to you.

What it says will happen

If I ask for anything, I'll owe them, and I'll have become a weight.

“Asking creates a debt I don't want to carry.”

A hypothesis, not a type

Your partner asks what you need and you say nothing, I'm good. You were sick last month and told them not to come home early. You know their bad days in detail. They hear about yours afterward, once it is handled. They say you are hard to get close to, and that confuses you, because you never ask them for anything. I thought I'd be fine by myself. Turns out I need someone around more than I figured.

In a relationship the Burden rule often looks like needing nothing from a partner, which can leave them with no way to be close to you. It is one way of reading the distance, and it describes a possibility in you, not a fault in them.

01

What you do in the relationship

The distance is what your partner notices. On your side it is made of things you decline.

You handle it and report later. You turn down the ride, the errand, the offer to come with you. You keep things even, and when they do something generous you return it quickly.

You make your bad days small. You apologize for crying. If you do ask for something and it is forgotten, you don't ask twice. I'd ask, it would get forgotten, and eventually I quit asking and did it all myself.

You are often generous in the other direction. You give a great deal and take very little, and from your side that feels like being easy to love.

02

What it costs

For you, the cost may be being alone inside a relationship. The person is right there, and the hard things still get carried by one.

For your partner, the cost may be having nothing to give. Some people feel close through being needed a little, and a partner who needs nothing can leave them with nothing to do for you. They may read it as not being trusted, or not being wanted.

It can also make things uneven. If you give freely and accept nothing, your partner may end up feeling in debt to you, which may be the very position you have been avoiding.

03

The rule this may be

Go one layer further, to what needing them may put at risk.

What it says will happen

If I ask for anything, I'll owe them, and I'll have become a weight. "Asking creates a debt I don't want to carry."

That is the Burden rule. Under it, a need is the start of owing, and owing someone you love may feel like the least safe thing there is.

Under the rule is a fear, that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left. In a relationship the fear can be very literal. If that is running, every need you keep to yourself may feel like one less reason for them to go.

What would answer the fear is receiving without owing. A partner who brings the soup, is glad to, and is still there in the morning with nothing added to any list.

04

What else it could be

Needed

Giving a great deal and taking nothing can also be a way of keeping your place. When someone offers to help you, what is the first thought? They shouldn't have to is the Needed answer. Now I owe them is the Burden answer. These two often run together.

Strong

Keeping your bad days to yourself can be about how you are seen. If someone helped you and literally nobody would ever know, would you accept? Put it to a friend helping you through one bad week, with nobody else ever hearing of it, your partner included. Yes is the Strong answer. Still no is the Burden answer.

Peace

Not asking can be a way of never giving them a reason to be annoyed. Protecting them, or protecting yourself? If you hold back so they won't be upset, that is the Peace answer. If you hold back for your own sake, that leaves Burden or Strong, and the question above separates those.

Two things are not this rule. Some people are private and feel fine about it, and what matters there is whether it is costing you closeness you want. And if asking for things in this relationship has been met with punishment, not asking is good judgment and none of this page applies. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
