At work they call you the organized one. At home you have been called controlling. A friend once said you worry too much. You would describe it as being responsible, and you are tired in a way that responsible does not cover. I know that I have a control issue.
The Ahead rule gets mistaken for being organized, for being controlling, and for three other rules that plan and check for different reasons. Which one it is changes what would help, so the differences are worth a few minutes.
01
One checked reservation, four reasons
Take one small act. The trip is tomorrow, and you have confirmed the reservation three times.
Under Ahead, you may have checked because if you stop managing, something could go wrong.
Under Right, because you made the reservation, and a mistake in it would be your mistake.
Under Peace, because if it falls through, the people traveling with you will be upset.
Under Needed, because handling the arrangements is what you are there for.
All four people make the same three calls. What someone does and why they do it are separate questions, and just relax answers neither.
02
What is under each one
Each of the four has a fear beneath it, and the fears are not alike.
Ahead says: if I let myself fall behind, it'll hit me before I see it coming. "Stillness is where it catches me." The fear is that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again.
Right: the fear is that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about.
Peace: the fear is that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong.
Needed: the fear is that without your usefulness there is no reason for you.
03
The questions that separate them
Ahead or Right: a small correction in a meeting. Is the sting about being wrong, or about not having seen it coming? Not having seen it coming is Ahead. Being wrong is Right.
Ahead or Peace: are you watching for someone getting upset, or for something going wrong? Something going wrong is Ahead. Someone getting upset is Peace.
Ahead or Needed: do you step in because they need you, or because something might go wrong if you don't? Something might go wrong is Ahead. They need me is Needed.
The list goes on past these four. Output can look like this when the checking is one more way of staying busy. Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered? Not covered is Ahead. Not producing is Output.
You may end up with two. You may end up with none, which is a fair outcome. The questions come out of subtraction. They are built to remove a possibility, and a possibility removed is a result.
04
Mistaken in the other direction
Other people have their own readings.
A partner or colleague may take it for a wish to control them, and to them it can look like that. On your side it may be an attempt to keep something from going wrong.
A friend may call it worry and tell you to stop.
Your own word may be responsible, and you are. The open question is whether you could set the responsibility down for an afternoon.
05
What is not a rule at all
Being organized is not the rule. Someone can like a plan and be just as content when it changes.
Watchfulness in a period that really is unstable is not the rule either. It fits the facts. The check is whether it continues when things have been stable for a while.
And if none of the four reasons was yours, that tells you where not to look.
Controlling takes up control as a strategy and the rules that can be under it.
