Anxious parent: when you need your kids to be okay

By · Last updated

As an anxious parent who needs your kids to be okay, their upset may land on you as your doing, or fixing it may be where you find your place.

Rules this may be

They come home quiet. You ask what's wrong, and then you ask again. You offer a snack, a solution, a phone call to someone who could straighten it out. Nothing else gets your attention until they have smiled.

Caring when your child seems unhappy is not a rule. This page is about the part that goes past caring.

01

What you do

Your day goes the way theirs seems to be going.

You solve things nobody asked you to solve.

You find it hard to leave a bad afternoon alone.

When they smile again, you notice how much of the day went to waiting for it.

People call it being a devoted parent, or hovering.

It may cost you your own evening, each time. It may leave little of you for anything else that evening.

02

What the fixing may be protecting

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

A quiet child may land as something you did, or something you failed to prevent.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

Being the one who fixes it may be where you have a place. Under Needed, a bad afternoon is a job, and the job is yours.

These are two of several. It may be neither, and it may be both, since two rules can run together.

03

What is under each

Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. What would answer it is being able to disappoint someone and still be alright.

Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. What would answer it is being wanted and not required.

04

One question

Is it worse when they're upset with you, or when they don't need you?

Upset is the Peace answer. Not needed is the Needed answer.

If neither fits, there is not enough to tell.

Some of this is not a rule at all. Caring when your child seems sad is love. When a child really is in difficulty, a parent's worry fits the facts. For Needed, the ordinary case is a caring person who can stop, and the tell is whether you can be unnecessary without it costing you something.

If you are worried about your child, that is not a question for this library. A pediatrician or a licensed family therapist is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Subtraction has nothing to remove from the caring itself. What the question can remove is one of the two reasons the fixing may be hard to put down.

One thing to try this week

The next time they come home quiet, notice the moment you reach for a fix.

Later, write down what you reached for and what you did. With that in front of you, the question above may be easier to answer, or it may not.

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988.
