Messy house makes me angry. Why?

By · Last updated

If a messy house makes you angry, as if the mess were an emergency, it may be about things being done right, or about heading off what could go wrong.

Rules this may be

There is paint on the table and flour on the floor. They are still painting, and you are already wiping. You say careful four times in a minute. You end it early and call it cleanup time.

Some messes are real problems, and this page sets those aside first.

01

The messes that are real problems

A hot stove. Scissors. A rented apartment with a pale carpet.

Stepping in there is judgment. This page is about the other kind, where nothing is at risk and you can't leave it alone anyway.

02

What you do

You stand close with the cloth. You do the pouring yourself. You redo what they did when they are not looking.

You say yes to the quiet activities and no to the others.

Afterward you clean past the point of clean.

People call it being a neat freak, or controlling.

It may cost you the activity, which you ended.

03

What the wiping may be protecting

Right

"Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."

How the painting and the pouring get done may matter more to you than the mess does. Under Right, standing by while it goes another way may feel like being wrong yourself. In the body, this library's words for Right are heat, and sometimes a flare out of proportion.

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

The mess may be the first sign of things getting away from you. Under Ahead, wiping early may be a way of staying in front of it.

These are two of several, and it may be neither.

04

What is under each

Under Right, the fear may be that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. What would answer it is being able to remain yourself while someone thinks you are wrong.

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.

05

One question

One question that separates these two is set at work and not at home, which takes your child out of it. If meetings are not part of your week, it may not fit, and the pair stays open.

A small correction in a meeting. Is the sting about being wrong, or about not having seen it coming?

Being wrong is the Right answer. Not having seen it coming is the Ahead answer.

If neither fits, there is not enough to tell.

Some of this may not be a rule. Liking a tidy home is a preference. For Right, high standards belong where precision really matters, and the check is proportion outside that. For Ahead, watchfulness in a period that really is unstable fits the facts, and the check is whether it continues when things are stable.

Nothing in subtraction decides how clean a house ought to be. The question only narrows what the wiping may be for.

06

One thing to try this week

Once this week, leave one harmless mess where it is for an hour longer than you want to. It can be one of your own.

Before you clean it, write one line on what you expected to happen, and what did.

If leaving it was not possible, write that down. It is worth knowing.

The strategy this page keeps describing has its own page, Controlling.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
