You are not in crisis. You understand yourself reasonably well. What you lack is someone to hold you to the thing you keep saying you will do. A friend suggested a coach, and you are not sure whether that is a real kind of help.
It is a real kind of help, and it has limits worth knowing.
01
What it is
Coaching is structured help aimed at goals. Cleveland Clinic has a plain piece on what a life coach is, how coaching differs from therapy, and what to watch for when choosing one.
It is fair to ask any coach about their training and experience.
02
Who it tends to suit
People who know what they want to change and need a plan and someone to answer to.
People who are steady. Coaching assumes you can do the thing once it is clear.
03
Who it tends not to suit
Anyone in crisis, and anyone dealing with something clinical. Coaching is not built for that, and a good coach will say so.
People who are not yet sure what is under the problem. A plan aimed at the wrong thing is still a plan.
04
How it fits with Project Gina
Project Gina doesn't decide whether coaching suits you. It checks a coach's credentials with the body that issued them and publishes what it found, with the date. Coaching has no state license in Arizona, so a coach's listing also says plainly that they are not a licensed therapist and do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. What Is Life Coaching? covers the credentials.
If you are in crisis, licensed mental-health care is the right door. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
